Big Push Back on Senior Living Project

We told you earlier this summer about Dublin’s Flock cameras — the license plate readers that have been popping up around town — and discussed some of the concerns that come with them.

Now one of those concerns has become a pretty real issue down the road in Columbus.

Columbus shut off its Flock cameras Thursday after a police officer was accused of searching for the same vehicle more than 200 times for reasons that apparently had nothing to do with police work. The officer has since been relieved of duty while the whole thing is investigated.

That raised an obvious question for other communities using the same technology: what are they going to do?

For Dublin, the answer is pretty simple. Ours are staying on. Dublin Police told 10TV that it plans to keep using the cameras, pointing to safeguards already in place here.

There’s no indication anything like what allegedly happened in Columbus has happened in Dublin. But Columbus is now taking another look at how its system was being used.

If old cars are your thing, Historic Dublin should be a pretty good place to wander around tomorrow.

The Dublin AM Rotary Classic Car Show is back for its eighth year, bringing everything from antiques and street rods to muscle cars, trucks and motorcycles into the historic district.

And you don’t need to know the difference between a street rod and a muscle car to go take a look. Admission is free, so you can just walk through and see what shows up. The cars start arriving in the morning, with awards handed out at 3 p.m.

If you have something you’d rather show off than look at, vehicle registration runs from 9 a.m. to noon and costs $15. Proceeds go to the Dublin AM Rotary Charitable Foundation, which distributes the money to charitable organizations.

The show is happening around North and Franklin streets in Historic Dublin.

Remember the senior living development proposed near Bright Road and Emerald Parkway? Some of the people who live nearby aren’t very happy with where it’s headed.

The latest plan calls for 175 senior apartments and 19 single-story villas on about 18 acres next to Hopewell Elementary. It would include independent living, assisted living and memory care.

The issue isn’t really senior housing. It’s how much development is being proposed for this particular piece of Dublin. The city’s long-range plan describes much of the property as appropriate for smaller-scale development with a residential feel. The proposed main building, however, would be three stories and contain more than 200,000 square feet.

That has prompted nearby residents to start a petition asking Dublin to reconsider the project’s density, traffic plan and how well it fits with the surrounding Bright Road neighborhood. They’re particularly concerned about an entrance on Bright Road across from Macbeth Drive and the additional traffic it could bring near Hopewell Elementary.

There’s another interesting wrinkle. The developer has pointed to Dublin’s housing study as showing a need for 1,040 new senior rental units by 2030. NBC4 took a closer look and found that number actually refers to the city’s projected need for all additional housing units during that period. The study estimates the need for new senior rentals at 110.

For now, though, nothing has been approved. The project is still in the concept stage, and the city says the developer hasn’t submitted an application to move it forward yet.

But with more than 100 people already signing a petition against the current plan, this probably isn’t the last we’ll hear about it.
