A Broadway Play Is Coming to Dublin
The Abbey Theater has a new show coming later this month, and the story behind this one is kind of interesting.
The Velocity of Autumn is about an 80-year-old woman whose family wants her to leave her home and move into a nursing facility. She has other ideas. In fact, she threatens to blow up the house if they make her leave.
Cleveland playwright Eric Coble wrote the play back in 2011, when his own mother was healthy. But not long afterward, she began showing signs of dementia and eventually had to move into assisted living herself.
Suddenly, the situation he’d made up wasn’t so made up anymore. Coble told BroadwayWorld that some of what he’d written actually helped him when his own family found themselves dealing with many of the same questions.
The play eventually made it to Broadway in 2014, and now it’s coming to Dublin for its first Central Ohio production. The Abbey Theater will perform it Sept. 25 through Oct. 4, with tickets at $25.
And despite that rather serious setup, The Velocity of Autumn is a comedy. Apparently there’s quite a bit to laugh about along the way.

Dublin Is Coming Together for Childhood Cancer
The Dublin Link is going to look a little different Saturday night. It’s turning gold.
It’s part of Bridge the Gap, a free event happening at Riverside Crossing Park for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. There will be games, crafts, music and activities starting at 5:30 p.m., but the reason behind the evening is a much more serious one: organizers say about 552 children in Ohio are diagnosed with cancer each year.
The event is organized by the Ohio Fights Childhood Cancer Collaborative, which brings together organizations from around the state that help children with cancer and their families. And Saturday is really a chance to bring some of those families together while making the rest of us a little more aware of what they’re going through.
Then around dusk, the Dublin Link will turn gold, the color for childhood cancer awareness. There will also be a candlelight vigil for anyone who wants to stay and take part.
It all happens Saturday from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Riverside Crossing Park, and it’s free. You'll find more info here.

Dublin Has Big Plans for 90 Acres of Metro Center
For some time, we’ve told you about Dublin’s plans to eventually turn Metro Center into something very different from the office park we know today. Now we have a better idea of what happens next.
The city is working on the zoning and design rules that would actually allow the transformation to happen, and those are scheduled to go before the Planning & Zoning Commission for a work session on Sept. 17. A recommendation is expected later this fall, followed by City Council consideration this winter.
And here’s a number that helps explain why Dublin sees so much potential there: Metro Center covers about 210 acres, and more than 90 of those acres are currently parking and asphalt. That’s roughly 7,700 parking spaces.
The long-term idea is to replace some of that with housing, restaurants, shops, green space and better walking and bike connections — without getting rid of the offices and businesses already there.
None of this means bulldozers are showing up next week. But after years of talking about what Metro Center could become, Dublin is now getting into the rules that would actually make it possible.
