18 of 25 Dublin Schools Got Upgrades This Summer

We told you earlier about the big expansion at Scioto High School being finished. But did you know that was far from the only upgrade Dublin students will see when they head back to school?

In all, 18 of Dublin City Schools’ 25 buildings got some kind of work done this summer.

18 of 25 Dublin Schools Got Upgrades This Summer

Why so much work? Well, a lot of our schools are getting up there in age.

Coffman High School opened more than 50 years ago, while Scioto is now more than 30 years old. Several of the district’s elementary and middle schools have also been around for decades — which means things like roofs, HVAC systems, elevators and pavement eventually need to be replaced.

And that’s where much of this summer’s work went.

Coffman got a new roof, HVAC and fire alarm systems. Grizzell Middle School got a new roof and HVAC system, while Thomas, Wyandot and Wright elementary schools all got new roofs. Several other schools received new HVAC systems, asphalt or elevator upgrades.

There were some more noticeable additions, too: Jerome got a new weight room and hitting facility, while Karrer and Grizzell both got new tracks.

So while the Scioto expansion was the project you probably noticed, there was a whole lot happening behind the scenes at schools across Dublin this summer.

Why Dublin for India's Independence Day?

If you were near Riverside Crossing Park yesterday evening, you probably noticed a crowd gathering that wasn't there for the usual reasons. The Federation of India Associations (FIA), the group that organizes Central Ohio's Indian community events, put on a celebration for India's Independence Day.

Why Dublin for India's Independence Day?

As you may expect, the location wasn't random. Dublin has the second-largest Indian population of any city in Ohio, trailing only Columbus itself. Roughly one in five of our neighbors is Asian, and Indian families make up a real share of that. So when FIA needed a place to hold this one, Dublin made sense.

Worth knowing: this was the smaller of two events FIA runs — their bigger India Festival is coming up later this month in Columbus.

There's a 136-Year-Old Secret Hiding in Dublin

Here’s something you probably don’t think about when you see a fire truck rolling through town: there’s a decent chance it started right here in Dublin.

Sutphen Corporation has been building fire trucks since 1890, and five generations later, it’s still run by the same family. The company has several facilities around Ohio, but every new truck starts at its Dublin plant, where the cab is built before moving on to other Sutphen facilities for the rest of assembly.

There's a 136-Year-Old Secret Hiding in Dublin

And it’s not a small operation. About 150 hourly and salaried employees work at the Dublin facility alone, helping build trucks that eventually end up at fire departments around Ohio and across the country.

Some don’t have to travel very far.

Washington Township Fire Department, which serves Dublin, is a Sutphen customer. So are departments in Columbus, Marysville, and Powell.

Kind of a fun Dublin connection hiding in plain sight — some of the fire trucks you see responding to calls around Central Ohio got their start right here in town.

A Note From Nick

You Asked How to Help. Here’s How.

A few of you have reached out asking how you can support Dublin Daily — and honestly, it means a lot just to hear that. Here's what actually helps.

The single biggest thing: forward this to a neighbor, a friend, or anyone who loves Dublin and might not know we exist yet. Word of mouth is everything for a local newsletter. Or just share dublinohiodaily.com next time Dublin comes up in conversation.

If you ever have a tip — a local business worth spotlighting, an event coming up, something happening in your neighborhood — hit reply and tell us. That's the fuel that keeps this going.

We also have sponsors who make Dublin Daily free. If something catches your eye, click their links — it makes a real difference.

Thanks for being here. Dublin is a better place to live when we're all looking out for each other — and that's really what all this is about.
