Got College Questions? Start Here.

If you’ve got a high school student at home, there are probably two pretty big questions coming eventually: Where are they going after graduation, and how are you going to pay for it?

Dublin City Schools is holding an event Wednesday that could help with both.

Trying to Figure Out College?

The College & Postsecondary Options Fair starts at 6 p.m. at Scioto High School, with information about colleges, career paths and other options after graduation.

Then, immediately afterward, there’s a presentation on financial aid and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) — the form families use to apply for federal grants, loans and other financial assistance for college.

So whether your student is still figuring out where they want to go or you’ve already moved on to the slightly less fun question of how you’re going to pay for it, there should be something useful.

The fair starts at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Commons at Dublin Scioto High School.

Who Knows Dublin Better Than Dublin?

You’ve probably seen plenty of “Best Of” lists around Dublin. Best pizza. Best burger. Best coffee. Best whatever.

I’ve never been particularly interested in doing another one of those.

For one thing, Google reviews already does a pretty good job answering most of those questions. And with public voting contests, the results can sometimes depend as much on which businesses encourage their customers to vote as anything else.

But I get a different kind of question from readers pretty regularly.

What’s the best vegetarian meal in Dublin? Where do people in their 20s and 30s go to meet other people? Are there any singles events around here?

I Want to Try Something New

Those are much harder to Google. And I’m sometimes equally useless. I’m not a vegetarian. I’m not in my 20s or 30s. And there are quite a few other things I’m not. 🤣

But there are more than 4,400 of us here reading Dublin Daily. And while none of us knows everything about Dublin, together we know a lot.

So I want to try something new.

Every so often, we’ll take a question one of you has, put it to the rest of us, and see if we can figure it out together. Then I’ll pull together what we learn and share it with everyone.

We’re starting with vegetarian food. I’ve attached a quick three-question survey below asking which Dublin restaurant has the best vegetarian food, what their best vegetarian meal is and what other restaurants and meals you recommend.

I’ll give everyone a day or so to respond, then I’ll share what the findings here.

Wait, Dublin Used to Race Frogs?

Remember the story we ran the other day about how the American bullfrog ended up on Dublin’s old license plates?

Well, a reader wrote in to tell us there’s actually a lot more frog history around here.

Back in 1967, the Dublin Kiwanis Club started an annual Frog Jump, which would become a Dublin tradition for about 50 years.

Apparently Dublin Has Even More Frog History

And it was pretty much exactly what it sounds like. Kids would catch the biggest or fastest frog they could find and bring it to a field in Old Dublin. The frogs would line up, and since the kids couldn’t touch them, they’d pound on the ground behind them to get them jumping toward the finish line.

For kids growing up in Dublin in the ’70s and ’80s, you have to imagine this created some pretty great memories.

So frogs weren’t just on our license plates. For about half a century, we were racing them too.

A Note From Nick

You Asked How to Help. Here’s How.

A few of you have reached out asking how you can support Dublin Daily — and honestly, it means a lot just to hear that. Here's what actually helps.

The single biggest thing: forward this to a neighbor, a friend, or anyone who loves Dublin and might not know we exist yet. Word of mouth is everything for a local newsletter. Or just share dublinohiodaily.com next time Dublin comes up in conversation.

If you ever have a tip — a local business worth spotlighting, an event coming up, something happening in your neighborhood — hit reply and tell us. That's the fuel that keeps this going.

We also have sponsors who make Dublin Daily free. If something catches your eye, click their links — it makes a real difference.

Thanks for being here. Dublin is a better place to live when we're all looking out for each other — and that's really what all this is about.
