If you drove anywhere near Darree Fields this weekend and wondered where all those soccer players came from, there was a pretty good reason.

More than 140 teams from Dublin and around Ohio took part in the 36th Dublin Charity Cup, a two-day youth soccer tournament that does something pretty impressive with all that soccer: it raises money for charity.

Over its first 35 years, the tournament has donated more than $881,000. Last year alone, it raised $27,000 for five Central Ohio organizations, including the Dublin Food Pantry and Dublin Food for Thought. This year’s proceeds will once again go to charities benefiting children and our local community, with the recipients expected to be selected later this year.

And if you’ve never really thought about how big Darree Fields is, a tournament like this puts it into perspective. The park covers more than 150 acres and has 18 soccer fields, which makes it possible to bring an event with this many teams together in one place.

That’s also something Dublin wants to do more of. The city has been working on plans for Darree Fields, SportsOhio and the surrounding area with the goal of making Dublin a bigger destination for youth sports — bringing more tournaments, teams and the families who come with them to our city.

So this weekend’s Charity Cup wasn’t just a lot of soccer. It raised money for local causes and brought teams from around Ohio together here in Dublin — a pretty good example of what we may be seeing a lot more of in the years ahead.

We occasionally post Dublin Daily stories on Facebook, and whenever the bridge comes up, the comments are fascinating. Plenty of people love it. Others still can’t get past what Dublin spent to build it.

And to be fair, $22.6 million is a lot of money for a pedestrian bridge.

I remember hearing that number myself and wondering whether it was really worth it. Then I started spending more time Downtown, and I came to appreciate what the bridge actually did. Historic Dublin and Bridge Park used to feel like two different places separated by a river. Now you can have dinner on one side, walk across the Scioto and be on the other a few minutes later.

That’s where I landed. But I can also understand looking at $22.6 million and thinking Dublin could have done a lot of other things with that money.

And Facebook comments aren’t exactly a scientific survey.
