Why Can’t Dublin Siblings Stay Together?

The Columbus Dispatch shared its list of five of the best sandwiches from around the Midwest this week. And if you want to try one of them, you don’t have to go very far.

Katzinger’s Reuben made the list — and one of Katzinger’s two locations is right here in Dublin.

It’s a pretty traditional Reuben: hot corned beef, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and house-made Russian dressing, all grilled on rye. And I have to agree, they make a pretty good one. It’s the best-selling sandwich on a menu with about 40 different choices, which also says something.

The list was put together with food writers from across the USA TODAY Network, with Columbus Dispatch food writer Bob Vitale choosing Katzinger’s as the local pick.

So if you’ve never tried it, you now have a pretty good excuse.

We’ve had some pretty good golfers come through Dublin over the years. And here's another really impressive one.

Jerome senior Brady Barnum was selected as one of just 12 golfers in the country to represent the United States in this weekend’s Junior Presidents Cup.

It’s basically the junior version of the Presidents Cup, bringing together 12 of the best young golfers from the U.S. and 12 from around the world for two days of competition at Medinah Country Club outside Chicago.

And Barnum has certainly earned his way there. He won the individual state championship last year while helping Jerome win the team title, and he’s now ranked No. 9 in the country by the American Junior Golf Association.

The Junior Presidents Cup takes place this weekend at Medinah Country Club outside Chicago, just before the regular Presidents Cup begins at the same course.

Pretty impressive for a high school senior from right here in Dublin.

The other day, we told you about Dublin parents asking the School Board to let younger siblings follow their older siblings when redistricting splits them between two high schools.

Since then, the parents sent us records indicating Dublin allowed exactly that during previous redistrictings. A 2014 district presentation also said siblings should be kept together and students grandfathered whenever possible.

So why is this time different?

The district says sibling exceptions could make enrollment projections less predictable and reduce some of the relief created by redistricting.

But the parents aren’t asking for an unlimited exception. Their proposal says siblings could stay together only if the enrollment numbers still work. Families would also provide their own transportation.

And there’s a very practical reason they’re asking.

Having children at two different high schools can mean two sets of practices, games, performances and school events—sometimes happening at exactly the same time. One family we told you about earlier has two sons who could end up playing football for different high schools on the same Friday nights.

So Dublin Daily asked the district three pretty simple questions: Was sibling grandfathering allowed before? How many students would qualify now? And what would allowing them to stay together actually do to enrollment?

Seven minutes later, the district directed us to its FAQ and said it had “nothing else to add at this time.”

The FAQ doesn’t answer those questions.

And that’s really where this stands. Families are asking the district to show why keeping these siblings together won’t work. So far, the district hasn’t.
